It’s been too long since I’ve written a blog post. I got so caught up in the 365 Project book that I failed to produce new writings. There are many photo stories to share with you, but there’s one in particular to start the new year.
Flashback to August 2016. I was spinning too many plates at the time and I could feel the fatigue setting in. The opportunity to take a weekend beach trip presented itself so I hit the road for St. Augustine. I usually like to visit the beach during a full moon as there is nothing sweeter than watching a full moon rise on the beach. Unfortunately the timing didn’t work out to do that this time. I opted for some late afternoon beach time and a nice dinner at Catch 27. I like to stay at La Fiesta Ocean Inn & Suites for its nice combination of beach access and affordability.
The alarm was set for just before sunrise the following morning. I felt tired, the stress of life weighing down on me. When the time came I did not feel motivated to get out of bed! But something in me said you’re here, who knows when the next opportunity will be. I mustered the energy to get up, make a cup of coffee, and gather up my gear. I walked out of the room into the quiet morning and was immediately floored by the colors of the sky. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was an explosion of color! Am I hallucinating? This can’t be real! What good fortune that I took the time to get out of bed. I was not prepared for the series of unfolding colors I was about to witness in a span of 90 minutes that morning.
The morning started with a lovely palette of purples, blues, pinks, reds, and peachy oranges. There was a large patch of textured cloud directly over me which added greatly to the composition. As the morning progressed the sky turned to softer oranges and pinks until the sun finally crested over a bank of clouds that had settled just along the horizon line. When the sun made her appearance everything became intensely orange. The higher she rose the more silvery metallic the sky became. As I took in my surroundings I realized that patches of fog had settled along the north and south sides of the beach. It was interesting to see the dense fog to my sides, and the luminous sky in front of me. I also noticed some dolphins swimming in the distance and I squealed with delight. Yet another reward for getting out of bed! The sun continued her journey upward until finally settling into that textured patch of clouds that had lingered with me all morning. The end result was an almost overcast, muted sky. A far cry from the intense vibrancy of the first morning light I was so lucky to have witnessed.
Life can get out of hand sometimes. It can be so easy to get pulled in too many directions and not know whether you are coming or going. It can be hard to hear your own voice amidst the cacophony of expectations and obligations. I feel fortunate that I was able to listen to my muse and drag myself out of bed that morning. Had I stayed in bed I would have gotten some much needed rest, but I would have missed out on one of the most incredible sunrises I have witnessed.
At the beginning of this post is a slideshow of the morning in chronological order so you can see the progression of color I witnessed. The last image is a testament to how lackluster the sky grew at which point I departed for my room. I have printed several of these images in various formats and they are available for sale in my shop. The shop is in its very early stages at this point. Send me a note if you have any questions or would like to have something printed that is not in my shop yet.
